Fischer, Velasquez Rise To The Top In New Hampshire By Mary Albl of DyeStat A pair of seniors were finally crowned the ultimate state champions on Saturday afternoon at Mines Falls at Nashua South High. Bishop Guertin's Caroline Fischer and Keene's Jake Velasquez claimed the New Hampshire Meet of Champions titles. Since her freshman year, Fischer has finished second, third and fourth in the race. On Saturday, the senior covered the 5,000-meter course in a winning time of 17 minutes, 55.3 seconds. The runner-up was Souhegan sophomore Chloe Trudel in 17:59.5, as she helped guide her team to the title with 80 points. In the boys race, Velasquez, who finished third a year ago, won the race in 15:12.5, almost a minute faster than his time last year of 16:06.5. Freshman Aidan Cox of Coe-Brown finished second (15:17). Coe-Brown, ranked No. 4 in the Northeast region, placed four in the top 20 to score 57 points and win the team championship. Next up for the runners and team that qualified is the New England Championships on Saturday, Nov. 9 in Manchester, Ct. at Wickham Park.
